Wanted: a local hero to switch on Flemingate’s Christmas lights
Every town has them. The people who show up, keep going and quietly make life better for everyone around them, usually without being asked and rarely with any expectation of thanks.
This year, we want to find one of them in Beverley — and give them the job of switching on Flemingate’s Christmas lights!
How it works
We’re asking you to nominate a local hero: someone who lives in or is connected to Beverley or the wider surrounding area, and who you think deserves the recognition.
There’s no fixed definition. It’s open to anyone of any age, and the reason is entirely up to you. To give you a sense of the kind of nominations we’re hoping to see:
- A volunteer who gives their time to a community group, food bank, charity shop or sports club
- A carer looking after a family member, friend or neighbour
- A young person who has raised money for a cause that matters to them, or shown real determination in difficult circumstances
- A teacher, teaching assistant or youth worker who has made a lasting difference
- An emergency services worker, NHS staff member or armed forces veteran
- A neighbour who checks in on people, organises the street, or is simply always there when someone needs help
- Someone who has come through something hard and kept others going in the process
- A local business owner or employee who supports the community beyond what the job requires
If you know someone who fits, or someone who fits no category at all but is clearly a hero to you, we want to hear about them.
The event
The chosen local hero will switch on the Christmas lights at Flemingate on the evening of Friday 13 November, with the event starting at 5pm.
The festive kick off event will also feature our amazing firework display, chances to win some amazing prizes at our snow globe, the return of Tipi Christmas, a singer, firebreather, roaming entertainment, fun fair rides and more! It also marks the start of our 12 days of Christmas — a run of festive activity each weekend at Flemingate through to Christmas.
How to nominate
Fill in the form below with the name of your nominee, how you know them and why you think they deserve it. Keep it as long or as short as you like, but tell us what makes them stand out.
Nominations close on Saturday 11 October.
We’ll read every entry and get in touch with the person chosen, along with whoever nominated them.
