Parkway Cinema and Theatre at Beverley’s Flemingate centre has been shortlisted in awards celebrating the cream of the UK film industry.

The six-screen independent venue has been nominated for the prestigious Cinema of the Year (24 screens and under) Award in the Screen Awards 2017.

The Screen Awards recognise the people and companies dedicated to connecting audiences with film. The awards celebrate much more than box office figures, as they acknowledge the wide array of studios, companies, venues, teams and individuals that contribute to the success of the British film industry.

With categories covering distribution, exhibition, marketing, publicity and brand partnerships, the judges look for creativity and innovation in reaching moviegoers – whether it’s for a Hollywood blockbuster or an independent release.

The Screen Awards are presented by Screen International, the leading film industry resource covering the international film markets.

The shortlists feature some of the biggest names in the industry, with 20th Century Fox leading the way with 12 nominations. Other nominees include The Walt Disney Company, Lionsgate and BFI (British Film Institute) with shortlisted entries contributing to the success of films such as Alien: Covenant, Beauty and the Beast, T2 Trainspotting and War for the Planet of the Apes.

Parkway Cinema and Theatre General Manager Cliff Baillie said: “We’re delighted to be nominated alongside some great cinemas and we’re flattered to be in such fine company.

“A lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes and it’s great for the team to be recognised. However, we couldn’t have achieved this without the support of the community and all of our customers.”

Parkway opened at the same time as the Flemingate centre in 2015 and has been a major success, bringing a much-valued new leisure venue to Beverley and drawing audiences from the town and beyond.

The venue presents the very best of current screen releases, from family blockbusters to more adventurous films, as well as a wide range of “event cinema”, bringing the best of live opera, ballet, theatre and other cultural events from around the world to audiences in Beverley.

Parkway’s screen 6 – also known as the Hayward Theatre – is a fully-equipped stage hosting everything from stand-up comedy to stage musicals.

Graham Tait, Flemingate Centre Manager, said: “Parkway is a superb, innovative venue and a beacon for the very best of independent cinema. This recognition is richly deserved.

“We were very excited to work with the Parkway team to bring such a high-quality cinema and theatre to Beverley and we’ve been delighted it has been proven so successful.

“Parkway is a major asset for Beverley and has made a significant contribution to the success and growth of Flemingate, bringing audiences into the centre and driving footfall seven days a week.

“It’s great now to see Parkway gaining national recognition and we’re sending our very best wishes to Cliff and his team for the big day.”

Parkway Cinema and Theatre is vying with other leading picture houses from across the UK for the hotly-contested Cinema of the Year (24 screens and under) prize.

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony hosted by radio and television presenter Edith Bowman at Grange St Paul’s Hotel in London on November 30.

Owned and developed by Hull-based regeneration company Wykeland Group, the fast-growing Flemingate centre has a host of major high street retailers, such as Debenhams, H&M and River Island, complemented by high-quality independents.

As well as Parkway Cinema and Theatre, Flemingate’s leisure line-up includes Firepit Smokehouse and Sports Bar, Buca di Pizza, Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Riva Lounge, Deli No.1 and Anytime Fitness.
