Flemingate in Beverley have partnered with business students from East Riding College to deliver a special community event to celebrate Bee Lady Day, taking place on Wednesday 13th May 2026 from 10am to 2pm. Inspired by the life and legacy of Hull’s much-loved fundraiser Jean Bishop, affectionately known as “The Bee Lady,” the event will celebrate community spirit while raising vital funds and awareness for Age UK Hull & East Yorkshire.

Bee Lady Day has been designed and will be delivered by East Riding College students as part of a live client project, giving them hands-on experience in planning, marketing and executing a public event, supported by the Flemingate Marketing & Events team.
The event is a true cross-college collaboration, with multiple departments contributing their expertise. Hair and Beauty students will offer face painting and nail stickers, Catering students will prepare a selection of themed cakes and sweet treats, Fashion students have created handmade items to sell, Music students will provide live performances between 11am-1pm, and Travel and Tourism students are supporting the promotion of the event—bringing together talent from across the college to create a vibrant, community-focused experience.
Visitors can expect a vibrant, family-friendly atmosphere with a range of interactive activities, including:
- Live music performances throughout the day
- Face painting and nail art
- Games and craft stalls for all ages
- A themed treasure hunt around Flemingate

With its bee-inspired theme of yellow and black, kindness and community action, the event aims to create a real “buzz” on site while encouraging visitors to support a charity dedicated to improving the lives of older people across the region.
There is even going to be a special visit from Bertie Bee, Age UK Hull & East Yorkshire, mascot honouring the legacy of Jean Bishop.

Funds raised on the day will go directly to Age UK Hull & East Yorkshire, helping to support essential services for older members of the community.
Jo Bridgeman, Marketing and Event Manager for Flemingate said:
“Bee Lady Day is a wonderful way to bring our community together while celebrating the incredible legacy of Jean Bishop. We’re proud to support East Riding College students in delivering an event that is not only creative and engaging, but also makes a meaningful difference.”
Rachel Foot, Employability & Placement Coordinator for East Riding College added:
“This project gives our students the opportunity to work on a real-world brief with a real impact. It’s been inspiring for them to create an event that honours such a well-known local figure while supporting an important cause.”
Bee Lady Day is free to attend, and everyone is invited to take part, donate, and celebrate the life of an inspirational woman whose kindness continues to make a difference.
