Pupils from nearby St Nicholas Primary School recently visited Flemingate to see what goes on behind the scenes during a typical day at the centre. Graham Tait, Centre Manager, Alyson Evans, Centre Administrator and Shaun Dart, Operations Manager, were on hand to give the 22 children a tour around the site including visits to shared arts space Creative Lab, Parkway Cinema and the mysterious CCTV room.
Creative Lab joint owner Chris Kidd talked about the works of the artists and designers on display in his arts space and the pupils were quick to ask questions and showed particular interest in portraits of Harry Potter, Amy Johnson and Donald Trump.
Flemingate’s CCTV room held a degree of mystique for the children who enjoyed taking a turn to move the cameras around the centre’s main street and loved hearing Graham’s story of a ghostly light captured on film in the dead of night!
The pupils were then taken behind the scenes at independent cinema Parkway and saw where the projectors which display the movies onto the big screens are housed.
The two hour tour finished with a quick fire Q&A between the inquisitive pupils and Graham, who then set an entertaining exercise to demonstrate the benefits of teamwork and working together.
The tour is just part of a regular community engagement programme between Hull-based regeneration company Wykeland and a selection of schools in the Hull and East Riding area, including St Nicholas Primary School in Beverley; All Saints Primary School and Hessle High School in Hessle; and Chiltern School in the Boulevard in Hull.
